Topic:
Operations in High Elevation, High Altitude, Hot & Humid Conditions
Speaker(s):
William Hill - Lead FAA Safety Representative
Brief Description:
Summers coming.... any direction (except south) out of Redding = mountains....within 30 miles east of Redding 10,500 ft..... west of Redding... 6-10,000 ft... north of Redding 14,000 ft.....
Pilots must always account for how environmental conditions affect aircraft performance. High elevation airports, high altitude flying, and hot or humid weather all reduce aircraft performance — sometimes significantly. These factors increase density altitude, making the aircraft behave as though it’s operating at a higher altitude than it actually is.
Key Hazards:
-
Reduced Engine Power Output – Thinner air means less oxygen for combustion.
-
Decreased Propeller Efficiency – Less dense air reduces thrust.
-
Lower Lift Production – Wings generate less lift in hot, thin air.
-
Longer Takeoff Rolls and Climb Times – Expect sluggish acceleration and slower climbs.
-
Risk of Overloading – Especially critical when departing from high elevation fields in hot weather.

If you have neither then make your way to downtown Redding, proceed to the Jail (tall building) and find the street called Placer, then proceed west about 13 blocks. At the top of the hill you will pass the entrance to Benton airport (DO NOT TURN THERE), proceed to the next traffic signal (Pleasant street) and then turn left, go one block and you will be looking at the EAA building. It will be on your left, part anywhere off the street (Also the EAA building is next the the Army National Guard unit/facility.
