- Pilot Deviaitons are responsible for many accidents and incidents each year. PDs can cause loss of separation and collisions with other aircraft or the ground.
- Airport environments concentrate large numbers of aircraft in a confined space, increasing the risk of collision.
- The aircraft accident with the greatest number of lives lost (KLM & PanAm at Tenerife) resulted from a Pilot Deviation.
- Thorough flight planning and following standard communication protocols are key to PD avoidance.
- Readback/Hearback protocols should be followed by pilots and controllers.
- Pilots are responsible for understanding and complying with all Air Traffic clearances and instructions. Pilots must question instructions that they don’t understand before acting.
