Title:
AirVenture 2025 Seaplane Base Forum - Seaplanes and Weather
Topic:
This forum will discuss several weather-related hazards and ongoing research to resolve them.
Date and Time:
Wednesday, July 23, 2025, starting at 13:30 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Gary Pokodner, FAA Weather
Brief Description:

Seaplanes used to have unique weather challenges, but as more new entrant aircraft are flying in urban environments and areas lacking collocated certified weather sensors, many of the weather challenges faced by seaplane pilots are similar to weather challenges facing Advanced Air Mobility (AAM and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). This forum will discuss several weather-related hazards and ongoing research to resolve them. Challenges to be discussed include adverse winds, conflicting weather observations, lack of a collocated certified weather sensor, and cognitive errors along with techniques being researched by the FAA to reduce or resolve these challenges for seaplanes, AAM, and UAS flights.
