Title:
AirVenture 2025 Forum - UAS vs Manned Aircraft in the Airspace
Topic:
This session is designed specifically for manned aircraft pilots who may feel uncertain or uneasy about drones.
Date and Time:
Saturday, July 26, 2025, starting at 14:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Greg Reverdiau, Pilot Institute
Brief Description:

Drones aren’t going away. Understanding how they operate is the first step toward safer skies for everyone. This session is designed specifically for manned aircraft pilots who may feel uncertain or uneasy about drones. We’ll cut through the confusion and clarify the essential FAA rules governing drone flights, including where and how high drones can legally fly, whether they can operate near airports or at night, and how Remote ID and LAANC fit into the picture.
You’ll learn about key limitations that drone pilots must follow—like visual line of sight, altitude caps, and restricted operations over people—and why most drone flights are far more constrained than many manned pilots realize. We’ll also explain how manned and unmanned aircraft can share airspace safely, and what tools like DROTAMs and ADS-B (or lack thereof) mean for situational awareness.
