Title:
AirVenture 2025 Forum - Can Weather Aggregation Benefit GA Pilots
Topic:
Will discuss weather data challenges, their associated risks, and gaps with some of the various techniques used by pilots.
Date and Time:
Saturday, July 26, 2025, starting at 12:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Dr. Ian Johnson, Gary Pokodner, FAA Weather
Brief Description:

What do you do if your flight destination or flight route lacks weather observations from certified weather sensors? Do you use a “nearest neighbor” certified sensor, trust a proximate non-certified weather sensor, use outputs from multiple proximate sensors to create an “illusion of precision,” or find the most proximate pilot report? If proximate weather observations provide conflicting information, how do you decide which one to trust? This presentation will discuss these challenges, their associated risks, and gaps with some of the various techniques used by pilots. It will also discuss weather aggregation research being performed by the FAA to reduce the risks associated with these challenging situations
