Title:
April 2025 Topic of the Quarter - Stabilized Approaches
Topic:
Aircraft Control: Stabilized Approaches
Date and Time:
Friday, April 25, 2025, starting at 10:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Gary Burleson - FAAST Team Representative
Brief Description:

A General Aviation Joint Steering Committee study found that the second largest group of fatal loss of control accidents occurred during the approach phase of flight.  Many of those accidents resulted from an unstabilized approach or a failure to go-around.

  • Nearly 20% of fatal loss of control accidents occur during the approach phase of flight.
  • Stabilized approaches are the foundations of successful landings.
  • Stabilized approaches are equally important for VFR and IFR operations.
  • Pilots should be prepared to go-around whenever an approach becomes unstable.

In this presentation, we'll define and discuss Stabilized Approaches and Go-Arounds. We'll also give you some tips on how to fly a Stabilized Approach and execute a successful Go-Around.
