Yukon Training Area Prescribed Burns
Ft. Wainwright, AK — The U.S. Army Garrison Alaska, with the assistance of
the Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service (BLM AFS) will burn
multiple woody debris piles and initiate several broadcast burns on Ft.
Wainwright’s Yukon Training Area (YTA) south and east of Fairbanks.
Burning could occur any time between August 21 and October 31, 2010,
depending on weather conditions needed for burning and adequate dispersion
of smoke away from populated areas.
The prescribed burns are designed to enhance U.S. Army and Air Force
mission training by proactively reducing the grass, brush, and woody debris
piles to lessen the risk of wildfires.
Smoke may be periodically visible in Fairbanks, North Pole, and Eielson Air
Force Base areas as a result of the burning operations.
For more information about the prescribed burns, contact the BLM AFS Public
Information Office at 907-356-5511, or AFS Dispatch at 907-356-5554.
