Yakima Airport Runway Rehabilitation

Starting on August 23, 2010, the Yakima Airport will begin construction on the rehabilitation of Runway 9/27.   Construction of the new paved surface will occur in three phases starting on August 23, 2010 with last day of the last phase expected to be September 14, 2010. During the three phases, landing and departures will be limited, and during the third phase the runway will be closed. At all times there will be an equivalent length of at least 3,800 feet on Runway 9/27 or Runway 4/22. Those that are intending on flying into Yakima during the rehabilitation period should consult local NOTAMS, call the airport offices, the airport tower, or one of the Fixed Base Operators as soon as possible in advance of your flight for up-to-date information. Precision approaches will not be available during Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3.

Phase 1 – Work will begin on Runway 27, which is the East End of Runway 9/27.  Work will commence August 23 and will end August 27.  The southeast corner of the airport will be impacted (the area that contains Yakima Airpark) by construction equipment and personnel.  Runway 9/27 will be operating during this time with a displaced threshold.  Approximately 4,000-feet will be available on Runway 9/27 for arrivals and departures while the Air Traffic Control Tower is open. There will be approximately 5,000feet of runway available for landing’s and take-offs when the tower is closed.  The tower is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. Runway 4/22 will be closed during this time as it intersects Runway 9/27 in phase 1.

Phase 2 – the West End of Runway 9/27.  Will commence August 30 and end September 3.  The Northeast corner of the airport will be impacted.  The FBO’s will be operating, but will be required to coordinate with the Tower and the contractors for arriving and departing aircraft.  Construction equipment and crews will be operating on the northwest side of the airport.  Aircraft, while having priority, may need to be escorted.  Approximately 4,065-feet will be available on Runway 9/27 for arrivals and departures while the Air Traffic Control Tower is open. The tower is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. 5,065-feet will be available after the tower closes.  All 3,800 feet of Runway 4/22 will be open during Phase 2.

Phase 3 – the center section.  Will commence September 7 and will end September 14.  During this time, Runway 9/27 will be closed to all flight traffic.  Horizon is suspending commercial service during this time.  The entirety of Runway 4/22 will be operational for all traffic that can utilize 3,800-feet for landing and take-offs.

Phase 4 – Relocate the Runway 4 REIL system to comply with FAA regulations.  Is anticipated to start September 15 and end September 17.  During this time Runway 4 will be closed. The entirety of Runway 9/27 will be open prior to the closure of Runway 4/22.

From September 24 through October 26, the balance of the project will be completed.
