Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

Sun ‘n Fun (‘n Safety!)
This year’s Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo (www.sun-n-fun.org ) is scheduled to take place April 21-26, 2015, in Lakeland, Fla. This year marks the 41st anniversary of this aviation extravaganza that attracts aviators and airplane enthusiasts from all over the globe. The event features aerial performances, exhibits, and a wide variety of educational seminars.
The FAA will also host a series of safety forums between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. each day at the FAA Aviation Safety Center. A “Meet the FAA” session on Thursday, April 23, will feature FAA Deputy Administrator Michael Whitaker. NTSB Board Member Dr. Earl Weener is also scheduled to speak on April 25, as well as U.S. Rep. Sam Graves who will host a general aviation town hall discussion that same day. To see a schedule of all the FAA events click here. The FAA Safety Briefing team will tweet out any schedule changes, so be sure to follow them @FAASafetyBrief.
Lastly, if you’re planning to fly to Sun ’n Fun, don’t forget to read the 2015 Sun ’n Fun Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) at http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/notices/.

Have ADS-B Questions? Get Answers Here
Starting in 2020, aircraft must be equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out to fly in most controlled airspace. Will you need to equip? It depends on where you fly. For more on how you should equip your aircraft, what equipment has been FAA certified, and what the benefits of ADS-B Out and ADS-B In are, go to www.faa.gov/go/equipadsb. You can also stop by the FAA Center at the Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In to get an ADS-B check-up on equipment you already have.

FAA Proposes List of Approaches to Be Removed             T
On April 13, 2015, the FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that contains a list of 736 redundant or underutilized VOR and NDB standard instrument approach procedures that have been identified for cancellation. The complexity and cost to the FAA of maintaining the ground based equipment for these approaches while expanding the new area navigation (RNAV) capability is not sustainable. To view the list of approaches slated for elimination, go to www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/procedures/reports/ or go to the Federal Register notice. Comments may be submitted on or before May 28, 2015.

Your Safety Reserve – Developing Your Personal Minimums
Personal minimums should be thought of as the human factors equivalent of reserve fuel, which is intended to provide a safety buffer between fuel required for normal flight and the fuel available. For a systematic approach on how to develop your own personal minimums, in addition to a tear-out worksheet, see Susan Parson’s article “Your Safety Reserve” in the March/April 2015 issue of FAA Safety Briefing.
