Title:
Quarter Turn Fasteners
Topic:
Incidents of engine cowl damage on turbofan aircraft resulted in damage to the airplane and handling capabilities.
Date and Time:
Thursday, May 11, 2023, starting at 20:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Robert Breaux, Ph.D.
Brief Description:

AMT Credit Available!

The engine cowl system consists of engine nacelle cowl doors, inlets, exhausts, and thrust reverser elements that utilize quarter-turn fasteners (often referred to by brand names such as Camloc®, Dzus ® fasteners) to secure one component to another. Several incidents of engine cowl damage and resulting separations have occurred across the Textron turbofan-powered aircraft product line.

The separation incidents resulted in damage to the airplane, and some have marginally affected aircraft handling capabilities. We have been unable to determine the root cause of these events. We believe that maintenance error is the primary initiator.
