Title:
CFIT Hazards include Towers Visual Traps and Rapid Weather Changes
Topic:
Preventing CFIT: Obstacle, Illusion, and Weather Risks in Orlando’s Class B Shelf
Date and Time:
Thursday, November 13, 2025, starting at 19:00 Eastern Standard Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Robert Breaux, Ph.D., CFII
Brief Description:

Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) doesn’t require mountains — Central Florida pilots contend with tall towers, cranes, antennas, and dense obstacle clusters under the KORL Class B shelf, plus deceptive night-over-water horizons, wetland featureless-terrain illusions, and sudden visibility drops from fast-moving summer convection or haze. This seminar examines local CFIT precursors, from automation slip-ups in congested airspace to database gaps on obstacle locations, and delivers strategies to spot and counter these risks early.

CFIT remains one of aviation’s deadliest accident categories, even in Florida’s flat terrain. In the Orlando area, under the KORL Class B shelf, CFIT-type events often stem from:

  • Obstacle Conflicts: Towers, cranes, and antennas exceeding 1,000 ftAGL near approach/departure corridors.

  • Visual Illusions: Night VFR over dark lakes or sparsely lit wetlands leading to unrecognized descent.

  • Weather and Visibility: Rapidly lowering ceilings from summer storms, sea-breeze fronts, or smoke/haze, compressing traffic into confined VFR corridors.

  • Automation/Mode Confusion: Distraction or misunderstanding of avionics during high-density sequencing.

  • Database Currency: Out-of-date obstacle data in TAWS, EGPWS, or moving-map systems.

Through Florida-specific case studies, participants will learn how to identify local risk cues early, maintain obstacle database accuracy, and apply practical countermeasures in visual and instrument operations.
