Title:
EAA Chapter 1674 Monthly Meeting
Topic:
Enhancing Preflight Weather Briefing Effectiveness
Speaker(s):
Gary Pokodner, FAA Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC) Program Manager
Brief Description:
This presentation will cover research findings on gaps in pilot preflight weather briefings. The gap analysis projects to be discussed evaluated the effectiveness and shortfalls of self briefings and Flight Services provided weather briefings. The results of the gap analysis projects were based on subject matter experts’ observations, post briefing interviews, and a novel method of having pilots diagram their mental model of the weather. After discussing the issues and gaps identified by the FAA research projects, the presentation will provide tips and recommendations to address the gaps. The presenters will provide suggestions for weather products to use for Long Term, Short Term, and Immediate planning, and will identify the utility and limitations of the suggested weather products. The presentation will also provide suggestions for processes to follow to maximize the effectiveness of a preflight weather briefing. Time will be left at the end for Q&A, and a summary tip sheet will be provided.
