Title:
NMPA WINGS Safety Seminar: Aeronautical Decision Making
Topic:
Flying safely requires good decision making.
Speaker(s):
Dr. Bob Worthington
Brief Description:
Flying demands more of a pilot than most other daily activities. Aeronautical decision making (ADM) requires a high degree of input and judgment. Bad decisions are related to poor judgment, faulty or incomplete data, or external interference with the decision making such as fatigue, a desire to get home regardless of risk, weather, or a belief that nothing bad will happen.

Additional Event Information & Acknowledgement of Industry Sponsor(s):
This seminar will begin by presenting the current status of understanding the decision making process; discuss how good and bad decisions are arrived at; and how to improve one’s ability to make good decisions. This will cover both flight planning and routine or emergency decisions that must be made during a flight. Bad decisions cause accidents and good decisions avoid them. In addition, the advent of emerging technology and its impact on decision making will be explored. This will be an audience participation seminar with different scenarios being presented and then the audience will discuss what to do and why.
The event is co-sponsored by the New Mexico Pilots Association and EAA Chapter 555. EAA 555 will serve hamburgers after the safety seminar for a modest donation.
This seminar will be presented by Dr Bob Worthington of Las Cruces, NM. Worthington is President of the US Pilots Association, a FAASTeam Representative, and a long-time aviation safety seminar instructor. A former US Army aviation psychologist, he is also a noted aviation writer. Currently he authors the monthly column The Left Seat, appearing in FLY-LOW magazine. Flying his C 182 RG he is an instrument rated pilot with over 6700 hours.
