Weight and Balance has been with us since Octave Chanute wrote his compendium
on aviation and the Wright's began to develop gliders and powered aircraft.
We've certainly come a long way since then.
Our knowledge of how to load an aircraft properly and how
loading affects performance is a key principle in safe flying. Weight and
Balance calculations are one of the first things we learned when we took our
basic flight instruction. Most of us probably remember the first time we
performed W & B calculations that showed us where we would be in the CG
envelope. The terms W x A =
M, GW, EW and how we determine whether our CG is aft of the datum line
are probably burned into our memories. All of these terms and information are in
our POHs. The aircraft manufacturers have provided us solid engineering and
flight-tested data insuring that the W & B data in the POH would give us a
stable and safe aircraft. However, occasionally reviewing the W & B process
and applying it to what we already know will make us more proficient and safer
pilots. It's simple. It's quick and it's easy.
