Wings Program and Flat Light
Topic:
Wings Program and Flat Light
Date and Time:
Wednesday, November 28, 2007, starting at 18:30 Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Mac MacIver
Brief Description:

Flat light is the diffuse lighting that occurs under cloudy skies especially when the ground is snow covered, there are no shadows cast, and the topography of snow-covered surfaces is impossible to judge.” Flat light greatly impairs a pilot’s ability to perceive depth, distance, altitude, or topographical features when operating under VFR. Under these conditions, pilots may become spatially disoriented and unable to maintain visual reference with the ground. Learn about the new Wings Program and about avoiding the risks associated with operating in flat, low light (winter) conditions.

Flat light is “the diffuse lighting that occurs under cloudy skies especially when the ground is snow covered. Under flat light conditions, there are no shadows cast, and the topography of snow-covered surfaces is impossible to judge.” Flat light greatly impairs a
pilot’s ability to perceive depth, distance, altitude, or topographical features when operating under visual flight rules (VFR). Whiteout is a similar phenomenon. Under these conditions, pilots may become spatially disoriented, unable to maintain visual reference with the ground, and unaware of their actual altitude.

Douglas "Mac" MacIver is an experienced helicopter pilot, Designated Pilot Examiner, and FAASTeam member.  He will lead an interactive discussion on two topics:  the New Wings Program and the perils of flying in flat light conditions.  Mac will cover some accident briefs as well as show a short video that covers most everything you need to know about flat light.  Come learn how to improve your decision making skills while making your flying safer and more enjoyable, AND enjoy some delicious Pizza Barn pizza.

Sponsored by the Pizza Barn restaurant.
