Driving:  Exit 101 Freeway at Los Posas, head south on Los Posas. Turn right at traffic light at Pleasant Valley.  Turn right at traffic light at Airport Way. Dept of Airport Building is last building on the left where Airport Way dead ends at Durley.  Flying: A three minute walk from the walk-through gate adjacent to Channel Island Aviation.  Walk out to Durley, turn left on Durley.  The Dept of Airports Building is on your right at the intersection of Durley & Airport Way.

A VC99's Pilot Proficiency Class

This presentation is designed as an interactive look into the life of the certified flight instructor. The target audience is anyone with an interest in aviation, from student pilots to ATPs (and even flight instructors). The class will be of particular interest to pilots thinking about becoming a CFI.

Tom Koff will share insights and anecdotes gleaned from thousands of hours teaching students to fly. What does it take to be a flight instructor? What are the characteristics a good flight instructor? What is the path for becoming a flight instructor? Is instructing dangerous? What motivates people to become flight instructors? What responsibilities do/should flight instructors have? What are the benefits of being a flight instructor? What are the drawbacks? Bring your own questions for an interesting evening exploring the world of the certified flight instructor.

Instructor: Tom Koff, ATP, Gold Seal CFI, CFII, MEI and Glider Instructor. With over 17,000 logged flight hours, he also holds ratings for seaplanes, gliders, and helicopters. A former Cal Poly professor, he has flown extensively in Alaska, and for seven years flew commercially as a glacier pilot, landing on the glaciers of Denali (Mt. McKinley). He has flown on several Iditarod races, and has also flown winter cloud seeding operations in Santa Barbara County. Based at Santa Paula airport, he enjoys flying into backcountry strips in his Cessna 185.  Tom has taught backcountry flying in Idaho. He is well known in the local flying community for organizing fly-ins to interesting places all over the West.

This program is one of a series in the Ventura County 99s twentieth Annual Pilot Proficiency Classes, a yearly series of approximately 20-25 seminars and programs from February to May. There is a fee for all classes except the February 19, 2020  "Reflections of a Test Pilot" with Tom Morgenfeld. Please go to our registration web site at http://www.vc99sclasses.com  and click on the class schedule tab for fee information which appears at the end of the class title.   The FAA does not permit us to include fee information here.  The web site also provides additional information about each class and the instructors.

Some classes fill to capacity quickly. Please register for the seminar at least 24 hours in advance to ensure we have seats for everyone at  http://www.vc99sclasses.com.  We cannot guarantee a seat  to people who do not register in advance.  If seats are available, we will gladly accept payments and registration from walk-ins at the door. 

Unless otherwise indicated on the registration web site http://www.vc99sclasses.com, all classes meet in the upstairs meeting room of the Department of Airports, 555 Airport Way, Camarillo, CA 93010, on the field at KCMA. There is no wireless network available to attendees in the classroom.  If you want Internet access during a class, you will need to use your own data plan or bring or activate a hotspot.
