Title:
CFIT - Controlled Flight Into Terrain
Topic:
VFR into IMC and Loss of Situational Awareness both contribute to CFIT accidents. How can we limit CFIT accidents?
Date and Time:
Saturday, June 15, 2019, starting at 11:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Mike Windom
Brief Description:

CFIT, Controlled Flight Into Terrain, is one of the deadliest and most frequent General Aviation accident causes. According to the FAA, during a typical year there are around 40 CFIT accidents, about half of which are fatal.

During the seminar, we will review several CFIT accidents and their causes. We will also discuss scenarios that are related to and causal of CFIT accidents including: VFR into IMC; Loss of Situational Awareness; Wire Strikes; IFR procedural mistakes; "Hot-Dogging" (or "Flat-Hatting" for you Navy pilots) and Unrealistic Aircraft Performance Expectation. We will also discuss how new technology in the cockpit is helping to reduce CFIT accidents and what else we can do to reduce the incidents of CFIT.

The FAASTeam Seminars at KPCM are held in conjunction with EAA Chapter 1178  VMC and IMC Club meetings. This provides organized "Hangar Flying" focused on building a safety consciousness among pilots. Since these seminars are part of the FAA Safety Program, these meetings provide informative presentations including group participation along with WINGS credit.

Pilots of all experience levels are welcome, as are non-pilots that are interested in aviation and aviation safety. Membership in an EAA Chapter, or an EAA VMC or IMC Club is not required to participate, but is highly recommended.
