It’s true that the plane flies the same way, whether the pilot knows what cause lift or not.  For decades and decades, pilots and aircraft designers adjusted the shapes of wings, without fully understanding why they worked.  It’s only within the last 20 years that NASA and aerospace scientists started making know that the popular theories of lift had holes in them.  And yet the planes kept flying.

SCFC Chief Pilot Dan Dyer takes time to explain concepts from Private Pilot aerodynamics at a pace that everyone can understand.  You’ll understand why exceeding the critical angle causes a stall, why the “Longer Path / Equal Transit” theory you were taught in your online ground school was wrong, and what the heck “ceiling effect” is.  You know, stuff every pilot should know. Dyer says “I wouldn't say this stuff is hard, but about 2 out of 3 CFI candidates get this stuff wrong.” Other topics include the lift equation, what causes induced drag, and an easier way to think about load factor.

The presentation aims for being one level down from an introductory aerodynamics course, but still several levels up from an aerospace masters of science in aerodynamics.  You’ll walk away understanding your flight controls better, but won’t be ready for your dissertation. We hope you’ll join us.

Dan Dyer is Chief Pilot of San Carlos Flight Center and has been instructing for 14 years, first in helicopter and now in airplanes. He has almost 4,000 flight hours and is the Bay Area's local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  He co-founded and manages the Bay Area FlyOutGroup - a social club of over 400 pilots that meet for lunches, dinners, and other fun aerial adventures. Directions to Room: Pilots who fly in should park in transient parking on the opposite side of the field and expect to walk about 10 minutes (.5 mile) to the Flight Center. Suite 215 is upstairs in the northwest corner. On occasion, rides may be prearranged through San Carlos Aviation and Supply.
