Middle Latitude Cyclones are the dominant weather pattern in the US. If you understand how these work with their interaction with the upper atmosphere, you will be one step ahead in flying safely in North America. By simply looking at a surface analysis weather chart, ie surface prog chart, you will be able to interpret areas of good and bad weather, wind directions and speed and estimate vertical profiles.
With atmospheric moisture, comes the hazards of icing. Other than a thunderstorm, nothing else is so detrimental to flight. California, because of it’s warmer winters is notorious for icing. How can we predict it and where can we find it?
