Today, Uber and Lyft, are causing the public to rethink how it approaches the idea of the taxi-cab. What about pilots? If you own or rent a plane, can you become your own independent mini-charter? Tread very carefully in this area as the rules about common carriage are very specific and you put your certificate and the safety of the general public in jeopardy.

Private pilots may not be compensated in any way for their role as a pilot. Even pilots with a commercial certificate are limited to accepting payment for only a very small number of operations. Every year, both private and commercial pilots run afoul of regulations by inadvertently doing something that can be interpreted as acting as an air carrier. Part 135 is the section of the Federal Aviation Regulations that oversees Air Carrier Operations, and as most pilots don’t want to get anywhere near it unless he or she is actually working for a Part 135 air carrier operation.

Air Transport Pilot and Check Airman Capt. Ben Taber will present some common ways that pilots may inadvertently cross the line, and expose themselves to harsh penalties. He also shows the numerous restrictions that air carriers have to protect the flying public. Protect your certificate! Captain Taber is a check airman and training captain with over 20 years and 12,000 hours of air charter experience throughout the western United States. His first 500 hours of flying were conducted in Alaska. Mr. Taber manages flight operations and charter sales for Dreamline Aviation in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a Dreamline Training Captain in Beech King Air aircraft.

Directions to Room: Pilots who fly in should park in transient parking on the opposite side of the field and expect to walk about 10 minutes (.5 mile) to the Flight Center. Suite 215 is upstairs in the northwest corner. On occasion, rides may be prearranged through San Carlos Aviation and Supply.
