Brief Description:

MACA

How are our skies kept safe from hostile activities? It is because we have the greatest combat training being performed in our own backyard by Nellis Air Force personnel.  Military pilots from all over the world are trained here to hone their skills in combat activities.  We will be given some insight as to what goes on in and around the NTTR and procedures to enhance civil and military safety. We can sleep safely at night!

Dave Hodges and Tom Miller are airspace managers for Nellis Air Force Base, Creech Air Force Base and Nevada Test and Training Range.  They have about 75 years of ATC experience between the two of them and still perform duties in the Nellis Air Traffic Control Facility.

PILOTS AND MEDICATION

Ira Smith, Commercial Pilot, FAASTeam Representative, and Cathy Stockdale, CFII,  Lead FAASTeam Rep. for HND will give a presentation on Pilots and Medication.   Unfortunately, a recent FAA study determined that over 40% of pilots involved in fatal accidents tested positive for medications/drugs.  Of these, 90% were flying Part 91 (General Aviation).  The extent to which medications/drugs were a contributing factor to fatal accidents is difficult to determine in accident investigation, so in the absence of data and (largely) regulation, the onus is on pilots to be aware of the impact to own performance. Discover how common over the counter medications and prescriptions can have unexpected effects on pilots.  Is there a recommended wait time after consuming the medication/drug?
