Brief Description:

Dissimilar Aircraft Operations

As general aviation pilots, we have to co-exist with different classes and categories of aircraft.  Dirigibles, biplanes, hot air balloons, gyrocopters, business jets, and ultralights all share the sky.  Each with their unique operational attributes, we have to respect and understand their idiosyncrasies.  From the fixed-wing pilot’s perspective the most likely encounter with an aircraft of a different category is helicopters.  And that will be our focus tonight – understanding and co-existing with helicopters.

Understanding helicopter operational procedures and capabilities/limitations will increase your ability to mitigate the hazard that they may pose.

- If you’re a fixed-wing pilot, have you ever wondered how helicopters enter the traffic pattern?  Or, why they fly such a steep approach on final?  Well as you might have guessed helicopters have unique operational characteristics.  Furthermore, they have certain helicopter-specific regulations that take into account their operational capabilities/limitations.

And unlike other categories, you’ll find helicopters routinely operating under VFR and IFR environments.  So aside from infrequent Class A airspace operations (yes some gliders operate in Class A, but not common), it’s very possible that you encounter helicopters under all weather conditions, day or night, and in all types of airspace.

This seminar is designed to help increase your understanding conditions in which you may encounter helicopters.  By learning their capabilities and limitations you can mitigate the hazards that they may pose.
