Title:
Safety Night (KWHP) - Winter Flying
Topic:
Preflight Planning, Weather Risk Management, and Safe Operations During Winter Flying
Speaker(s):
Richard Mend - ATP SEL/MEL CFI-AI FAASTeam Representative
Brief Description:
Winter flying can turn an ordinary trip into a high-risk operation long before you ever start the engine. Colder temperatures, changing weather, icing, reduced daylight, strong winds, contaminated surfaces, and aircraft performance considerations all demand additional preparation and sound aeronautical decision making.
This seminar examines winter flying from the planning stage through arrival. Topics include evaluating winter weather, icing risks, aircraft preparation, cold-weather starting and operations, density and performance considerations, runway conditions, fuel and alternate planning, changing weather en route, personal minimums, and diversion or cancellation decisions. Practical scenarios will demonstrate how good preflight planning and risk management can prevent pilots from becoming trapped by deteriorating conditions.

Why Attend:
Southern California pilots may enjoy mild weather at home while encountering dramatically different conditions only a short flight away. Mountain crossings, high-elevation airports, freezing temperatures, winter storms, and rapidly changing weather can create hazards unfamiliar to pilots accustomed to the Los Angeles Basin. This seminar will provide practical strategies for identifying those risks before departure and managing them throughout the flight.
Space is Limited - Advance Registration Encouraged
Pre-registration helps ensure seating availability and supports timely FAA WINGS credit processing. Questions regarding the seminar may be directed to Richard Mend at 818-636-1021 or mendaviation@sbcglobal.net.
