Title:
Aero Elite Flight School July Safety Meeting-When All Goes Quiet Forced-Landing Decision Making
Topic:
Teaching Modern Forced-Landing Decision Making for IFR and Night Operations
Date and Time:
Monday, July 27, 2026, starting at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time (16:00 PDT; 17:00 MDT; 18:00 CDT; 13:00 HST; 15:00 AKDT; 16:00 Arizona; 23:00 GMT)
Brief Description:
Kevin Lang, CFI, CFII, and MEI will deliver a presentation that explores forced-landing decision making focused on survivability rather than ‘perfect’ outcomes. Drawing from extensive scenario practice and instructional experience, the session examines how pilots can transition from searching for perfect landing sites to identifying better options; options that increase survivability even when conventional options are limited.
Topics include:
How environmental conditions change forced-landing priorities at night and in IMC
When water, roads, or nontraditional landing areas may represent safer choices
Avoiding fixation on unreachable airports or the ‘perfect’ field
Continuous decision-making models instructors can teach students during all phases of flight
Integrating modern situational awareness tools into risk management training without increasing workload
