Title:
EAA Chapter 190 Monthly IMC Club Meeting
Topic:
Surprises At Night: IFR flight In IMC With Encounters Of Unexpected Turbulence And Some Odd Autopilot Behavior
Date and Time:
Monday, July 20, 2026, starting at 19:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Darin Durham
Brief Description:

We are flying along on a nice smooth flight until suddenly it isn't. Bright flashes of lightning and turbulence increasing.  Another check of the EFB and the weather you thought was well south appears to be everywhere around you. The sound of the autopilot disconnect sounds its alarm and the updrafts and down drafts are increasing at a rapid rate as you try to keep heart rate from redlining. Suddenly you start remembering your training and the stories you heard and read about. Set power to maintain VA or below, but enough so you don’t stall, maintain wings level and altitude if you can. Advise ATC what is going on and request a block altitude if needed and get a vector out of heavy echoes.  Remember aircraft attitude is everything. Bring your stories share with everyone and we’ll bring this topic to the conscious forethought in the comfort of the Executive Flight Center so if it ever happens to you, you will be better prepared.

What is the EAA/IMC Club?

EAA provides monthly program resources in the form of actual IMC related scenarios designed to encourage open discussion, and for all participants to answer the question “What would you do if this happened to you?”

What is the purpose of EAA/IMC Club?

The purpose of EAA Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Clubs is to promote instrument flying, proficiency, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share information, provide recognition, foster communications, promote safety, and build proficiency in instrument flying.

EAA IMC Clubs are extensions to local EAA chapters and offer monthly IMC program meetings where pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences.

Do you need to bring anything?

First, bring your thoughts or story and be willing to share them with the group.  This meeting is very interactive.  Participation by the group is a fundamental element to the EAA/IMC Club meeting.

Others have found it helpful to bring along a copy of their flight manual, GPS manual, and charts.  If you navigate with an iPad, bring it along.

Who can attend?

You don't need an instrument rating to attend.  This meeting is open to all current, non-current, and future instrument pilots.

Click here for more information about EAA IMC Clubs.

Question of the Month:  Many pilot consistently use a 65 or 75 percent power setting in cruise.  Under what conditions would a best range or best endurance power setting be warranted, and how can you set them?
