Who this is for: Master-level instrument pilots who want to practice coastal and overwater IFR operations on the HNL–ITO route, including oceanic procedures and diversion strategy.

CFII-led, LOFT-style IFR session in our FAA-approved G1000 NXi Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD, non-motion). This Master-tier scenario recreates the Hawaiian island hop from HNL → ITO, with Pacific oceanic procedures, weather deviations, and non-radar operations.

Scenario goal: Train pilots in coastal and overwater IFR operations — emphasizing RNAV navigation integrity, contingency procedures, and real-world arrival challenges into Hilo.

What you’ll practice:

  • IFR clearance and departure from Honolulu with oceanic separation requirements and overwater procedures. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1 & 2)
  • RNAV routing across water with airworthiness considerations and navigation redundancy planning. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 9; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
  • Arrival and RNAV transitions into Hilo International with terrain and weather considerations. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 3 & 4)
  • Weather-driven deviations and abnormal decision-making with limited alternates over water. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
  • LOFT-style overwater diversion planning and contingency procedures. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
  • Executing RNAV approaches to landing with automation management and stabilized approach discipline. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)

What you’ll walk away with:

  • Experience managing IFR oceanic-style procedures, navigation redundancy, and contingency planning over water.
  • Improved ability to make weather-driven diversion decisions when alternates are limited and terrain/water drive the options.
  • More confident use of automation and RNAV procedures for coastal and island IFR operations.

Syllabi and credits:

  • S-MF1-W-1.0-01 — Operating on and around airports/heliports/seaplane bases (1 Master Flight credit).
  • S-MF2-W-1.0-01 — Flight operations away from airports/heliports/seaplane bases (1 Master Flight credit).

How this Activity satisfies each syllabus:

Master Flight Topic 1 — Airports (S-MF1-W-1.0-01)

  • Brief and execute IFR departure from HNL with oceanic separation requirements and overwater procedures. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1 & 2)
  • Plan and execute RNAV arrivals into ITO with terrain and weather considerations and precise altitude/speed compliance. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 3 & 4)
  • Conduct stabilized RNAV approaches to landing with proper configuration and energy management. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)

Master Flight Topic 2 — En Route & Approaches (S-MF2-W-1.0-01)

  • Navigate RNAV routes across water with airworthiness considerations and maintain navigation redundancy. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 9; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 2)
  • Practice weather-driven deviations and abnormal decision-making with limited alternates over water. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
  • Execute LOFT-style overwater diversion planning and develop contingency procedures for oceanic operations. (FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 1)
  • Manage automation and maintain stabilized approach discipline during RNAV approaches to landing. (FAA-H-8083-15B, Ch 8 & 10; FAA-H-8083-16B, Ch 4)

Completion Standard: All tasks are performed to Instrument Rating ACS (FAA-S-ACS-8C) standards for risk management, aircraft control, and instrument procedures. The Activity is considered complete when the pilot can consistently brief, fly, and debrief the profile to the applicable ACS standard, regardless of time.

How to book:

  1. Pick your session length. Master-level LOFT scenarios work best in a 3-hour session to allow time for comprehensive briefing, execution, and debrief.
  2. Select date & time. Use the calendar to choose a convenient slot. Instructor schedules may vary (active pilots).
  3. Confirm your booking details. Enter your information, review the session summary, and submit the online form to reserve your time.

Quick booking: 3-Hour Lesson (Recommended) · 2-Hour Lesson
