Cost: There is a cost associated with this activity.

CFII-led, LOFT-style instrument session in an FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD, non-motion). Designed for instrument-rated GA pilots who need to maintain or regain instrument currency under 14 CFR §61.57(c).

What we do in the AATD:

  • Six instrument approaches (ILS/LOC/RNAV as briefed)
  • Intercepting & tracking courses
  • Holding procedures
  • Unusual attitude recovery (IFR)
  • ATC communications and checklist discipline
  • Takeoff/landing evaluation when applicable to the selected standard

GA-focused instruction with airline-informed discipline: standardization (SOP), concise callouts, stabilized-approach gates, energy & automation management, and efficient avionics workflow—assessed to the appropriate FAA ACS/PTS (this is not Part 121 training).

Choose your evaluation standard (instructor will apply the matching ACS/PTS):

  • Basic (Private/Instrument): Assessed to the Private Pilot ACS for airport operations (incl. T/O & landing when evaluated) and the Instrument ACS for IFR procedures.
  • Advanced (Commercial): Assessed to the Commercial Pilot ACS for IFR procedures and airport operations as trained.
  • Master (ATP/CFI): Assessed to the ATP and/or CFI ACS/PTS, scope tailored to GA IFR proficiency objectives.

Currency path: Within the 6 calendar months after your currency window closed, you may regain currency by completing the §61.57(c) tasks in an aircraft or approved simulator/device. Beyond 6 months out of currency, schedule an IPC with a CFII.

WINGS credit & validation: This session may be validated in FAASafety.gov when flown with a qualified instructor. Please provide the same email you use on FAASafety.gov so credit can be applied. Note: Completing a phase of WINGS within 12 months satisfies §61.56(e); this single activity is one component and does not, by itself, satisfy a flight review.
