"Autorotation - Power-Off Landing in a Helicopter"
Saturday, May 14, 2016 12:00 Pacific Daylight Time

Located at:
San Carlos Flight Center
655 Skyway Road
Suite 215
San Carlos, CA 94070

Description:

Your engine has failed. Without power your rotors rapidly slow. You need to keep the rotors spinning, but how?  To the uninitiated, an autorotation can be an intimidating maneuver.  For helicopter pilots, autorotations are one of our basic emergency procedures. It is the quickest, and only safe way to the ground in certain emergencies. Much of emergency training is perfecting the reflexes to a proper autorotation entry.

SCFC helicopter CFI Kelton Porter will review basic autorotation concepts, including the FAA requirements for performing the maneuver according to the PTS. He will include basic aerodynamics of an autorotation, and how to utilize energy management to increase safety and awareness of the aircraft’s position in and movement through space.

Kelton Porter is a helicopter CFI at San Carlos Flight Center and has over 280 hours in Robinson Helicopters. His pursuit for expanding safety and awareness within the helicopter community has led him to obtaining his Commercial and CFI certifications, as well as attending the Robinson Safety Course.
