Title:
CFIT Controlled Flight Into Terrain
Topic:
VFR into IMC and Loss of Situational Awareness both contribute to CFIT accidents. How can we limit CFIT accidents?
Date and Time:
Saturday, September 28, 2019, starting at 10:00 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Mr. Mike Windom,
Brief Description:

CFIT, Controlled Flight Into Terrain, is one of the deadliest and most frequent General Aviation accident causes. According to the FAA, during a typical year there are around 40 CFIT accidents, about half of which are fatal.

This presentation is a guided group discussion of Controlled Flight Into Terrain and how we can limit or prevent it. During the seminar, we will review several CFIT accidents and their causes. We will discuss scenarios that are related to and causal of CFIT accidents including: VFR into IMC; Loss of Situational Awareness; Wire Strikes; IFR procedural mistakes; "Hot-Dogging" (or "Flat-Hatting" for you Navy pilots) and Unrealistic Aircraft Performance Expectation. We will also discuss how new technology in the cockpit is helping to reduce CFIT accidents and what else we can do to reduce the incidents of CFIT
