Mike Folkerts is an air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), serving as a regional investigator in the central U.S for the last seven years. In this capacity, he has investigated over 200 civilian aircraft accidents.

Mike is an airline transport pilot and flight instructor with over 7,000 flight hours in a variety of civilian and military aircraft. He has extensive experience in safety investigations, education, and program management.    

Prior to joining the NTSB, Mike served in the US Air Force (USAF) for 25 years, including assignments flying the C-130, C-21 (Lear 35), T-38, T-1 (Beechjet 400), and the mighty Twin Otter. He served as the chief of safety at the USAF Academy, the busiest VFR traffic pattern in the U.S., and worked as an investigator and final evaluations officer at the USAF safety center.

After retiring from USAF, Mike flew the Boeing 737 for United Airlines, as well the DA20 as a contract flight instructor for the USAF. He also served as the civilian program manager for USAF Academy aviation programs, which included glider, parachuting, power flight, and unmanned aircraft operations. He has taught aviation safety courses for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and currently gives safety presentations throughout the U.S. and abroad.
