Drones are really cool and most people would love to fly one but do you have what it takes to be a real drone pilot? Do you want to fly one as a hobby (Part 101) or do you want to be a commercial drone pilot (Part 107).
Join Werner von Stein, owner of the San Francisco Drone School, as he will discuss what is a UAS or drone, what you need to do before you fly one, how safe they are, and how to pursue hobby versus commercial use. Werner is truly dedicated to this field and will tell you everything you need to know to be a safe and competent drone pilot as well as answer any questions you may have.
Werner von Stein a native German from Hamburg, Germany and a tool and die maker by trade. He is an expert in the field of servicing commercial film and digital photo equipment. He worked for more than 30 plus years in the imaging industry where he held multiple positions, from field service engineer up to service manager from the west coast to the Marshall Islands, looking after 12 field service engineers.
In the mid 70’s he started building and flying RC airplanes and helicopters. Those were very different back then and you really needed to know what you were doing. In 2010, he began building RC aircrafts with cameras as well as video on board. These were quite different, expensive and large and did a very poor job. After playing with different flight controllers he finally found the one which worked best for him, the DJI Naza series. This was a game changer. However due to his photo service career, he never really had the time to continue in the RC world of flying.
Currently, he has put the photo world behind and is runs a full time UAS drone business.
Werner has helped to start the Hiller Aviation drone plex and has volunteered many hours as well as he has been teaching drone building classes at the museum. He has been an active drone member in the bay area and has helped out at many drone events in Northern California. He has hosted the Hiller Aviation physical flying days for their summer program on Treasure Island so that the camp kids would be able to fly outside of their drone cage. He is and has hosted most of the physical flying classes for the San Francisco Academy of Arts drone courses on Treasure Island as well.
Werner is the owner of the SF Drone School where he teaches young kids as well as older folk’s how to fly safely in the US airspace. He has a 14CFR part 107 UAS pilot license and a 14 CFR part 102.29 daylight waiver for the US. He strongly believes that only a properly trained pilot is a safe UAS pilot. He has was one of the first beta testers from DroneDeploy when they still used the copilot program as well as one of the first DroneDeploy DJI APP testers.
He is now focusing his workload on the SF Drone School as well as the test flight research center. Since April 2017 SF Drone School will hosts 14 CFR part 107 class as well as flying course for the upcoming UAV – drone pilots. From building, flying, training, and repairing them, they do it all. He is one of the first UAS FAAFast team members in the Bay Area who is actively promoting to fly UAS’s safer in US airspace

San Carlos Flight Center has created BAY FLIGHT 2018, an aviation conference for SF Bay Area pilots interested in staying current about the latest topics in aviation, learning new skills and techniques, and hearing from leaders in the field and will be held on Oct 27, 2018 (www.bayflight18.com).
San Carlos Flight Center is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our evening safety seminar programs. Space is often limited so it is important to sign up early through the FAA event notification system at FAASAFETY.GOV. SCFC members may choose to watch the seminar live over the web at home. Contact your SCFC member service rep at (650) 946-1700 to confirm secure online access to any particular seminar.
