Title:
IFR Charts for VFR Pilots
Topic:
IFR charts for VFR pilots, for enhanced situation awareness.
Speaker(s):
Dr. Stephen Bateman, CFI
Brief Description:
This is a live face-to-face seminar, not a webinar, focusing on aviation safety and situational awareness.
As well as the set of VFR charts and the Chart Supplement, there is a parallel set of IFR charts used for departure, en-route operations, approach, and landing. Within moderation, these IFR charts can provide VFR pilots with enhanced situational awareness, as well as providing useful information for terminal and en-route obstacle clearance and collision avoidance.
This seminar is not a crash-course in IFR procedures and certainly does not promote or condone VFR flight in less than VFR conditions, but it does offer insights into IFR charts and the Terminal Procedures Publication – and how they may be used to enhance situational awareness during VFR operations.
Furthermore, after this seminar – and with a small amount of study - the VFR pilot will be able to benefit from the new ease of switching between VFR and IFR charts on “electronic flight bags” such as ForeFlight, Garmin Pilot and others, and so get better utility out of these tools.
