Brief Description:

The presenter, who has a Ph. D. in psychology, will discuss several topics affecting aeronautical decision making:

1. Limits to visual perception that affect spotting traffic

2. Limits to attention that affect instrument scan

3. How habits can be good (allowing multi-tasking) and bad (causing oversights)

4. How deference to authority can work against you in an emergency

5. How cognitive distortions, such as misjudgement of danger, can negatively affect decisions

 

Visual examples will be presented for most topics; others will be illustrated by flight examples. Advice will be given for ways to correct each of these perceptual and cognitive distortions.
