You’ve decided you are not going to do DME arc approaches or simply let your proficiency lapse because they are uncommon and usually something else easier is available. Then it happens, you are IMC and at an airport with surrounding terrain that demands the approach in use which happens to be a DME Arc. Do you remember how to do it? Are you flying your usual plane that has a GPS that will automatically fly them or in another plane that does not? And, if you are in your plane, is your autopilot working? If it is, will it quit halfway through the procedure?
Do not fear the arc. In fact, they can be quite fun and rewarding and will keep you proficient with the instruments. In this seminar, Brian Eliot will cover the DME arc approaches found at Jack Mc Namara Field Airport in Crescent City California (KCEC), Fresno Chandler Executive Airport in Fresno, California (KFCH), Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco Washington (KPSC) and Yakima Air Terminal/McAllister Field in Yakima Washington (KYKM).
Instrument approach plates pack an extraordinary amount of information into a very small space and with information that you need to know to fly the approach safely. VFR pilot’s can also use them in VFR conditions. It will make your flying more precise, professional and above all, safer. If you are an IFR or VFR pilot, take advantage of our Chief Instrument Pilot at San Carlos Flight Center Brian Eliot as he presents his expert insights.
Brian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area.
