Title:
Winter is Coming
Topic:
Don't miss this seminar on California weather with an aviation meteorologist.
Date and Time:
Saturday, December 16, 2017, starting at 12:00 Pacific Standard Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Ashley Helmetag
Brief Description:

Winter is around the corner and besides the temperature dropping, what can we expect?  It’s California and it’s always nice right?  Or will it be an el nino or la nina year?  What about ceilings, winds or one of the most feared enemy of aviation, Mr Ice!

We can go to The Weather Channel, Aviation Weather Center, Duat, Foreflight and WX Weather Brief and get the reports but a deeper understanding is often necessary to determine our secret weapon, the back up plan.

Today, the opportunity to speak with a local meteorologist have gone by the wayside.  Today's plethora of weather tools on the web have really streamlined gathering weather and preflight information.  But talk to the seasoned pilot of not so long ago and they will be the first to tell you how valuable it was to chat with a meteorologist at the local flight service station to get a good feel of the weather and it's current trends before your flight.

San Carlos Flight Center is proud to bring back Ashley Helmeteg who has worked as a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Unit at Oakland Center Air Route Traffic Control, to speak us on West Coast Weather.

Ashley Helmetag, is a former meteorologist at CWSU Fremont. She has her B.S in Aviation Meteorology, and an Air Traffic Control minor from Florida Institute of Technology (2007).  She is working on her M.S Aeronautical Science, Aviation Human Factors from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.  She started with the NWS in 2010 right here at ZOA CWSU through 2016.  Prior to the NWS she worked with the private sector as an assistant supervisor at a meteorology and flight planning company in Houston, TX.  She and her husband are also an avid sky divers.
