Cross Country Flight Planning for the August Solar Eclipse Update
At T minus 16 days, a safety checklist for flying to the solar eclipse
Date and Time:
Saturday, August 5, 2017, starting at 12:00 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Dave Kramer
Brief Description:

The last total solar eclipse was in 1998 and in North America, 1991.  After August, the next one will be in 2024. This is by far the most popular event for astronomers around the world.  This year it will pass through Oregon, and FOG would like to take this opportunity to observe this rare and unique event and to do it safely.  The path of the eclipse is over 300 miles away and in a mountainous state. This will involve cross country planning, mountain flying and high density altitude considerations.

The overview of this trip was presented in May.  This seminar will review some features of that presentation as well as go over the final checklist for this event to enhance your safety and enjoyment of such an astronomical historic event.

Our speaker is Dave Kramer MD and he is an instrument rated, tailwheel endorsed private pilot as well as a basic and instrument ground instructor with an interest in weather and astronomy. He has been flying since 2012, has over 800 hours of which 300 have been in the IFR system.  He also enjoys flying at night as well as flying in the LA area.

This event qualifies for FAA Wings credit.
