Topic:
Preventing Loss of Control in General Aviation: Lessons Learned from NTSB Accident Investigations
Date and Time:
Saturday, September 9, 2017, starting at 08:30 Eastern Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Various speakers from the NTSB, FAA, & AOPA
Brief Description:

Did you know that? Since 2012, nearly half of fatal general aviation accidents in the New York/tri-state region have been caused by LOSS OF CONTROL (LOC) in flight. LOC involves an aircraft’s unintended departure from controlled flight due to a variety of reasons, such as pilot distraction or loss of situational awareness, or even weather. Unfortunately, the circumstances for these accidents are often repeated over time, and too many preventable crashes are occurring.

Prevent Loss of Control in Flight in General Aviation has been on the National Transportation Safety Board’s  (NTSB) top 10 Most Wanted List of safety improvement areas for several years.

NTSB investigators will present local accident case studies occurring in New York and the surrounding area, and experts from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association  (AOPA) will offer their own unique perspectives on this critical safety issue.

NTSB Board Member Earl Weener will deliver opening remarks. Member Weener took the oath of office as the 41st Member of the NTSB on June 30, 2010. He brings to the Board his experience as an industry executive, long-time safety advocate, flight instructor, pilot, boat captain and aerospace engineer.

You are invited to an exclusive safety workshop on to learn more about LOC, its causes, and how to avoid LOC in flight.

Featured Speakers:

NTSB Board Member Earl Weener

NTSB Eastern Region Deputy Chief Luke Schiada

FAA National FAASTeam Manager Valerie Palazzolo

AOPA Air Safety Institute Manager of Accident Analysis David Kenny

SEPTEMBER 9, 2017, Preventing Loss of Control in General Aviation: Lessons Learned from NTSB Accident Investigations.

  • Loss of Control (LOC)
  • What Causes LOC?
  • Lessons Learned: A look at the recent accidents in the New York/tri-state area involving LOC.
  • How to avoid LOC in flight.
  • FAA Perspective on LOC.
  • AOPA Perspective on LOC.

By attending this seminar, and others like it, you can become part of the FAA Pilot Proficiency Award Program [also known as WINGS] by participating in a recurrent training program. This program was expanded in 2008 and developed for a higher level of safety by employing consistent recurrent training, which has been identified as a major factor in reducing General Aviation [GA] accident rates.

Remember, as part of this seminar program, WINGS is designed to help keep you safe, and by participating and staying WINGS current you may maintain a valid Flight Review. We appreciate your participation in this event.

Do you know your limitations? The seminar will also direct your attention to the Mid Island Personal Limitations Checklist to help teach “situational awareness " through the experiences of other pilots, help develop good judgment, and better understand what's legal vs. what's safe and smart.
