Speaker(s):
Lieutenant Neil Penso
Brief Description:

Lt. Penso will explain his thoughts and history of safely operating helicopters over water, as well as in conflict zones. Specifically he will talk about how to prepare for the 'worst days at work' and how to be vigilant and confident about handling dangerous situations and how to avoid making emergency situations.

Lt Neil Penso graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1999 with a BS in English, then completed an MA in English Literature at George Mason University, also in 1999. Commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy, he attended Navy Flight School in Pensacola, FL and earned his wings of gold in 2001. He was then assigned to flying duty in San Diego, CA where he flew the SH-60B and MH-60R Seahawk helicopters in anti-submarine warfare and maritime strike missions from 2001-2008. During this time he spent more than 18 months deployed on destroyers within carrier strike groups and participated in Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM in the Arabian Gulf.

In 2008 he accepted a transfer into the Coast Guard and has been flying the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, conducting search and rescue and maritime counter-drug interdiction, as well as many other Coast Guard missions.

Lt. Penso is a qualified aircraft commander, military instructor pilot, CFI/CFII, and helicopter ATP.
