Title:
WAAS or GPS Failures when Flying RNAV Approaches
Topic:
No LPV LNAV or APR at the FAF
Date and Time:
Wednesday, July 19, 2017, starting at 19:00 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Brian Eliot
Brief Description:

GPS and WAAS-based instrument approaches have changed the way we fly.  They are very precise and have decreased our reliability and cost of ground based navigation facilities. They are easier to fly and more precise than the traditional approaches.

GPS and WAAS are available 99.99% and 99.9% of the time respectively. Therefore pilots can interpret this as 100%.  But if you fly enough, one day you will experience a failure.  What then?

Join Brian Eliot, Chief Instrument Flight Instructor at San Carlos Flight Center, as he discusses what to do and how to train for these rare occurrences. You will then be prepared to handle this outage like a pro.

Brian is San Carlos Flight Center’s resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer, a software developer, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He regularly presents at San Carlos Flight Center safety seminars and has a reputation for making complex concepts easy to learn and understand.

This event qualifies for FAA Wings credit.
