Title:
FAASTeam Certified Flight Instructor Open Forum 2nd Qtr 2017
Topic:
Preparing for the Unexpected
Speaker(s):
John Dennis, CFI
Brief Description:
Managing the "Startle Response" in Emergency and Abnormal Events. FAASTeam Flight Instructor Open Forums provide an opportunity for Flight Instructors, Ground Instructors, Designated Pilot Examiners, and the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) to meet and discuss one or more of the Top 10 Causal Factors in General Aviation Accidents at each of the Open Forums. So many pilots take a “kick the tires… light the fires” attitude to taking off. If we teach students to not only consider the possibility of an engine failure on takeoff, but more importantly teach them to brief what they will do if the engine fails at any point of a takeoff and initial climb, they should be more prepared when it does indeed happen. Be prepared to discuss Threat and Error Management (TEM), Cognitive Flexibility and your thoughts during this informative meeting.
Together as a Team, the Instructors and Designated Pilot Examiners can combine their extensive knowledge and experience with sound judgment to create and provide the most comprehensive and effective pilot training experience, followed by a reliable and effective evaluation.
