"Effective Pilot/ATC Communications” with William Broadwell

A VC99s Pilot Proficiency Class

Wednesday, Apr 5   7:00 - 9:30

Bill Broadwell, an Air Traffic Controller with more than 40 years of experience, has developed a detailed program to assist pilots of ALL skill levels to be highly effective communicators with ATC. He deals with “mike fright” and gives pilots a complete picture of what’s occurring on the other end of the radio.  This programs teaches you how to be clear, concise, easily understood and CONFIDENT.  Bill’s teaching style is humorous, passionate and relatable as he shares his vast, accumulated knowledge that will help YOU be a better pilot.

This is a great class for student pilots and rusty pilots who want to improve or refresh their ATC communication skills. It is also a good refresher for seasoned pilots.

This seminar will:

  1. Help you learn to communicate with ATC and better understand ATC instructions.
  2. Give you a better understanding of standard ATC phraseology utilizing the FAA JO 7110.65 and AIM.
  3. Increase your comfort level and understanding when operating within the airport environment.

Instructor: William (Bill) Broadwell  has been in the Air Traffic Control field for over 40 years. His career began in the Army in 1976 when his only request was to “work with airplanes”. He got his wish as an Air Traffic Control Specialist.  Bill began as a civilian ATC in 1986 and has worked in complex airport environments his entire career.

The pinnacle of Bill’s distinguished career was his 3 ½ years (May 2009-February 2013) on the NATO base in Kandahar, Afghanistan. As a contractor controller, he had to apply every skill he had ever learned into action. The dense traffic and working with so many different types of aircraft challenged him to the limits.  He says “I was able to be there as a witness to the endless sacrifice and valor of our military men and women.  It was an incredible honor.”

Throughout his entire career, Bill has received constant awards for exceptional service, teamwork and his “above and beyond” work ethic in ATC towers across the United States and Afghanistan.  He is dedicated to the “customer service” aspect of his job as an ATC.  Bill teaches that when the pilot and controllers work together, it should be a helpful exchange for both parties.

Bill and his wife currently live in Oxnard, California.  He has continued his ATC career at Oxnard Airport. He is currently on the Board of Advisors for the Aviation Academy at Oxnard High School and is a regular at Aviation Career Day (sponsored by the Ventura County 99’s) held in Camarillo, California. Bill has been sharing his passion for aviation with young people and students of all ages for decades. He is also a regular guest speaker at the Pilot/Controller Seminars held at Santa Paula Airport.

This program is one of a series in the Ventura County 99s 17th Annual Pilot Proficiency Classes, an annual series of 20-25  seminars and programs from February to May. There is a fee for all classes.  Please go to our registration web site at http://www.vc99sclasses.com  and click on the class schedule tab for fee information which appears at the end of the class title.   The FAA does not permit us to include fee information here.  The web site also provides additional information about each class and the instructors.
