Weather and pilots have a love/hate relationship. We can be the best of friends or the worst of enemies. Understanding weather patterns, prognostic reports, and radar will help you respect the weather and make better weather predictions for your flight.
Imagine if your small piston single aircraft had onboard weather radar. Safety would increase. Your ability to see and avoid would be created aided by onboard devices that could see thunderstorms and other strong precipitation. Unfortunately, onboard Wx Radar is only a dream for most light pistons and we are forced to rely on less accurate ground-based solutions.
San Carlos Flight Center welcomes back popular guest speaker Ben Taber to share some of what he has learned about storms and weather from his 20,000+ flight hours as a charter pilot. He will discuss the uses of radar images, both airborne and ground-based, and how to understand how the limitations of each system impact a pilot’s ability to avoid hazardous weather. In the presentation, he will dig a little deeper into radar than most private pilots have, and describe what we now know about storms shapes and shadows, and the specific limitations of ATC radar. Finally, he will end the seminar with a discussion of weather-related accidents and how they may have been avoided.
Join us for Ben Taber's seriously humorous take on general aviation and dive deeper into your pilot knowledge bank at this engaging and informative seminar. This event is open to all pilots.
Bennett Taber is a check airman and training captain with over 20 years and 15,000 hours of air charter experience throughout the western United States.
