This event is part of our IFR Roundtable series of discussion groups, where advanced and novice IFR pilots share knowledge about particular aspects of instrument flight. We focus on one small IFR procedure or topic area and spend some time talking through challenges, definitions, techniques, and safety issues in that topic area.

This session topic: Instrument Departure Procedures. The majority of instrument training is often spent on enroute and arrival procedures, but getting safely away from the ground and into enroute protected airspace is critical. Operating low to the ground in IMC in a climb is just as dangerous as instrument approaches to minimums. A healthy understanding of instrument departure procedures is a requirement of all safe instrument pilots.

In this seminar we will focus entirely on departing. Presenter Brian Eliot will introduce the topic, including departures from both towered and untowered airports, and review regulations for takeoff minimums and required climb rates. He will review some of the changes in terminology that have happened over the years and the various places that departure procedure information is accessible to pilots.

Presenter Brian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer, a software developer, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He regularly presents at San Carlos Flight Center safety seminars and has a reputation for making complex concepts easy to learn and understand.
