This is the first of three safety seminars on Saturday, Feb 8th 2014 that will review essential piloting skills and knowledge, and present some new material pertinent to safe operation of aircraft in the airspace of eastern Washingon. John Swedburg, a faculty member with Big Bend Community College and Bob Clarke, a professional pilot have between them nearly six decades and many thousands of hours of professional flying experience. John Townsley is a FAASTeam volunteer from Spokane with 35 years of flying experience. This seminar is made possible by the generous efforts of the Flying Farmers, and by the aviation department of Big Bend Community College. A brief self evaluation quiz will be completed by each participant at the end of each seminar to assess their understanding of material and concepts. Aircraft performance is more than just manipulating the controls. It begins with an understanding of aircraft systems, knowing the aircraft's design limits, assuring that the aircraft is airworthy - including required documents- and is operated within its design envelope. Aircraft performance is a critical factor in successfully managing in flight emergencies. Factors to consider include density altitude, weight and balance, turbulence (including wake turbulence), and aircraft configuration. The seminar will review the need for pilots to maintain excellent situational awareness, monitor aircraft instruments, manage aircraft performance, and exercise good decision making skills in emergency situations.
