Brief Description:

The Southern Alps of New Zealand present some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet.  They are a spectacular place to fly sailplanes, offering motorless flights stretching hundreds of miles over and among glacier capped peaks. When the wind blows hard, mountain waves set up and soaring flights to 20,000 foot altitudes and beyond are common.

Our speaker will share his experience, including video clips, of glider flying in the New Zealand Alps.  He will explain how glider pilots use thermal, wave and ridge lift to fly long distances at high altitudes.

We will also learn about wave and rotor conditions and associated flight hazards for both glider and power pilots, and tactics for managing the aircraft in these conditions.  And we will learn how glider pilots train to land safely off-airport using tactics that are relevant to engine-out landings in power planes.

Finally , we will have the opportunity to discuss operations at airports with significant glider and towplane traffic, including Hollister, Truckee and Minden airports.  Our speakers will review best practices for minimizing conflicts between powered and nonpowered aircraft.

Harry Fox is President of Bay Area Soaring Associates, operating out oif Hollster and Truckee.  Harry has been flying gliders around the western US since 1997, with his best day being a 400 statue mile straight-out soaring flight from Truckee to Parowan, Utah.

Also present will be Charlie Hayes, chief instructor at Hollister Soaring Center.  Charlie has been flying gliders in the Bay Area, the Sierra Nevada and the Great Basin for over forty years.  Some local pilots believe Charlie is an example of human-animal genetic engineering, as he appears to have the soaring instincts of a Redtail Hawk.
