The session begins with a discussion of what's good and what's bad about paper charts. It continues with an analysis of how we pilots use paper materials, from preflight briefing to engine shutdown, and specifically which materials we use in each task or phase of flight. From there we explore what the task analysis teaches us about Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) design and how we might measure the usability of a given EFB solution. Following are some assessments of some popular EFB software packages in light of those lessons from paper charts and from the task analyzes. The presentation concludes with some counsel and cautions about the notion of using a consumer-grade tablet computer in flight.

Dr. Brian K. Wade earned his PhD in electrical engineering in 1986 from the University of Notre Dame. In his 25-year career as a software engineer he has designed, built, or helped measure the function and performance of several complex computing systems. In 1996 Brian began flying and has earned private pilot ratings and endorsements for airplane single-engine land, airplane single-engine sea, instrument airplane, tailwheel endorsement, and high-performance airplane, having logged over 1000 hours total time. In summer 2010 Brian began experimenting with removing paper charts from his cockpit and by early 2011 was no longer using paper materials in flight.
