Additional Event Information & Acknowledgement of Industry Sponsor(s):
Amateur built and light sport aircraft are fundamental to the general aviation community in the United States.  However, accidents in these types of aircraft have suggested a need for increased preparedness for the challenges associated with these airplanes.  Historically, experimental airplane flight operations represent a small component of flight hours, but a significant percentage of General Aviation (GA) accidents. For example, 2009 accident data disclosed that while experimental airplanes are involved in approximately 27% of fatal accidents in the United States, they fly only 3.4% of the total general aviation fleet hours.

Although an increase in risk of experimental aircraft operations may be acceptable to the general aviation community and the general public in order for benefits of amateur built airplanes to flourish, both FAA and industry agree that improvements in safety are required.

Art Tarola, the guest speaker, is an A&P with Inspection Authorization, Sport Pilot Instructor and Sport Pilot DPE. He also holds an A.A.S. degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology and is a certified rotax engine repairman
