MIKE SCHNEIDER  will discuss Safety aspects of NCSA 2009 glider operations,
including occasions when canopies and spoilers were not properly closed and locked before the glider signaled readiness for launching; the need to be ready to abort the launch for a variety of reasons, including unexpected traffic which would cause a collision hazard; the need for vigilance and supervision of low time solo students who may not have been fully trained for cross-wind conditions or take offs and landings on Runway 23, particularly with strong south-westerly winds. Dos and dont's to ensure SAFETY in BYRON GLIDER OPERATIONS - What can go wrong?
BILL LEVINSON AND CHARLIE FERGUSON will go over highlights of Byron glider Ground Operations, reviewing aspects of the role of the Field Manager, in anticipating needs for action on the flight line - monitoring traffic, using proper tow signals; use of the radio for spacing of traffic involving glider taking off or landing; arranging for timely retrieve of landing traffic; training new members and visitors unfamiliar with glider operations; limiting the use of golf carts for non-essential activities such as 'transportation' to the club house, etc.  Bill will show the proper knots to use for tie-down of gliders to prevent damage from the high winds that occur in Byron. Charlie will discuss the peculiarities of Blanik ground handling
MIKE VOIE will tell you EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AIRSPACE FLIGHT REGULATIONS IN BYRON AND SIERRAs AREAS - USING CHARTS TO NAVIGATE WITHIN THE SYSTEM - THE INS AND  OUTS OF AIRSPACE FOR GLIDER PILOTS.  HOW TO AVOID CHECKRIDE ERRORS - CHECK FOR TFRs - SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE. HOW to FLY SAFELY in WAVE WINDOWS -PHYSIOLOGY; OXYGEN EQUIPMENT and USE - FARS + NCSA Rules.
PILOT AIRSPACE DEVIATIONS CONTINUE TO BE A MAJOR RISK IN THE NATIONAL AIRSPACE SYSTEM. SAFE AND PRUDENT GLIDER PILOTS HAVE SUPERIOR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS and know that planning is the key to safe soaring in the various Airspace areas.
BOB SEMANS will talk about the CAP CADET GLIDER PROGRAM in Nevada and Northern California -  how to introduce Cadets to the joys of flying gliders and how NCSA pilots may be able to join in this effort.
