Last fall, noted aviation record holder, Steve Fossett disappeared while on a brief pleasure flight from the Flying M Ranch in Nevada. His failure to return precipitated the largest land search in history with intense national and international media attention. Our seminar will examine this search and how SAR operations by the Civil Air Patrol and the supporting military assets have dramatically changed with new technologies that expand the scope and reach of traditional visual search. This search also stimulated thousands - worldwide - to try to find the lost aircraft by computer search using satellite imagery supplied by DigitalGlobe to Google Earth.
SARSAT/COPASS Satellite monitoring of ELTs for SAR alert will change next year and Bob Jones of the Rochester FSDO will review the history, the scope of pending changes and their impact on GA operations.
We shall also provide a brief review of the simple pre-flight actions - always anticipating a possible emergency, and how to prepare a low cost (very basic) emergency kit.
Also, between 630 and 7PM and during the break, the Civil Air Patrol will have their Cessna 182 with NavIII (Glass Panel) available in the hangar hooked up with ground power supply to demonstrate preprogrammed search patterns for direct viewing / demonstration. Don't miss it!
As part of our required WINGS review, we shall review the BASIC knowledge and flight requirements.
This event is sponsored by Boshart Enterprises. Refreshments and door prizes will be available.
