Title:
Aging Aircraft - The Problems We Are Facing
Topic:
Aging Aircraft - What we need to know as we fly older aircraft
Date and Time:
Thursday, January 31, 2008, starting at 19:00 Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Marv Nuss - An Aging Engineer
Brief Description:

This seminar provides owners of aging airplanes guidance about maintaining the airworthiness of their airplanes. The GA fleet is aging. In 2000, the average age of the nation’s 150,000 single-engine fleet was more than 30 years. This briefing consists of “best practices” that go beyond normal inspection requirements. Marv Nuss, our featured speaker, is the FAA Small Airplane Certification Directorate's program manager for continued operational safety.  He has over 30 years experience and will share his knowledge with us. This seminar provides owners of aging airplanes guidance about maintaining the airworthiness of their airplanes. The GA fleet is aging. In 2000, the average age of the nation’s 150,000 single-engine fleet was more than 30 years. By 2020, the average age could approach 50 years.

The GA fleet is being used well beyond the flight hours and years envisioned when the airplanes were designed. There is concern that continued airworthiness safety matters will become more common as the fleet ages. Several factors are key in keeping the existing fleet in service. Safety studies show that the biggest safety concern for GA safety is pilot situational awareness. This briefing consists of “best practices” that go beyond normal inspection requirements.

Marv Nuss, our presenter, is the FAA Small Airplane Certification Directorate's program manager for continued operational safety.  He has over 30 years experience and will share his knowledge with us. Marv has been involved in recent small airplane age related issues, including T-34, T-6 and Mallard wing failures, the twin Cessna wing spar AD's and ag plane wing fatigue problems.  During his career he has worked aging problems on helicopters, fighter jets, small airplanes and airliners.

If the airplane you fly has been around for a number of years you can benefit from his experience.  It's not only a good way to learn about saving an older airplane, but perhaps YOU as well.
